Traditions:
Costa Rican culture combines the facets of various other cultures (Latin American, Spanish and Caribbean cultures). Costa Ricans have long called themselves Ticos. Traditions revolve around the family from the moment of birth to that of death. Important family traditions are: baptisms, first communions, engagement parties, weddings and funerals.
Celebrations:
Costa Rica has several significant religious celebrations. The main religious events are: Easter, Christmas and the celebration of the Virgin of the Angels.
For Easter Week Costa Ricans typically go to the beach. For them it is a time to relax and to enjoy life. During the Christmas celebration a many people go to churches or just stay at home, while others go to the beach.
Another significant religious celebration is the Virgin of the Angels which occurs on the 2nd of August. During this holiday many people walk to the city from all parts of the country, in order to pay a "promise" to the Virgin or to renew their faith.
Alcohol:
The legal age to purchase or consume alcohol is18 years. The country prohibits alcohol sales on several days each year: Election Days, Good Friday, and during The Holy Week.
Sports and Hobbies:
Many Costa Ricans are known as great sport-lovers, so they like to either play, or watch sporting events, ranging from motocross to swimming. But the most popular sport in Costa Rica is soccer. The most famous soccer team is “La Sele”.
Undoubtedly another popular activity in this country is fishing. Costa Rica is well known around the world as a “sport fishing paradise.” Sport fishing in Costa Rica is a team sport and you need an experienced team leader for success. That team leader is Captain Mark Corn. He is the founder of Costa Rica Sportsman. Also, other popular activities are: whitewater rafting, surfing, golf, diving, and sailing.
World famous sports personalities from Costa Rica include: Silvia Poll and Claudia Poll in swimming; and, Ernesto “Lobito” Fonseca in motocross.
